INTRODUCTION

This study was undertaken to determine why there is only one descendant of Moses Cleveland on Martha's Vineyard Island, Massachusetts today when he had so many descendants. Did they all move from Martha's Vineyard? Were no or few sons born who lived to adulthood, married, and had sons?

Each succeeding generation considers only sons who remained on Martha's Vineyard, i.e., if a 4th generation Cleveland was born on Martha's Vineyard and moved off Island, his descendants will not be listed in the 5th generation.

Daughters are listed as a descendant in succeeding generations only when they marry another Cleveland descendant.

The assumption is made that sources are the same for husband and wife and are listed only once for both. Significant source differences for husband and wife are listed separately.

Format of places is town, county, state, country, i.e., Edgartown, Dukes, MA is town of Edgartown, Dukes County, State of Massachusetts.

While every effort has been made to insure accuracy of the information, it is inevitable that there will be corrections to be made. And, of course, there is much more information to gather and add. It is intended that the research will continue and revisions will be printed. Information may be sent to Judy Swan, 8611 Larthorn Drive, Huntington Beach CA 92646-4503.

Note: This book was originally compiled with the use of GENBOOK, from Clement Custom Programming, Auburn CA 95603. The statement "They had ## children" is a programming statement which automatically was placed in the text according to the number of children listed in the database. Because this study was limited to descendants on Martha's Vineyard, some female children were left out of the data base, therefore, these families may have had more children than are listed.

210. Llewellyn8 William Cleveland (182.George7, 114.Henry6, 72.William5, 28.Benjamin4, 15.Joseph3, 4.Ebenezer2, 1.Moses1) was born 30 Apr 1893 in Vineyard Haven. He married Lydia Phinney West 1 Feb 1917 in West Tisbury. She was born 8 Apr 1898 in West Tisbury, the daughter of Edgar More West and Agnes Amelia Murdock.

They had seven children: Elizabeth Agnes Cleveland, Melvin Francis Cleveland, Lena Walker Cleveland, Marjorie May Cleveland, Ruth Lydia Cleveland, Harold William Cleveland, and Rita Ann Cleveland.

Lydia died 12 Sep 1989 in Oak Bluffs, and was buried in Vineyard Haven.

Lydia West Cleveland raised seven children through hard work and adaptability. She sewed, knitted, crocheted, cooked, canned, raised chickens, to name just a few, and all done without the help of modern conveniences.

Lydia cooked daily for ten people on a wood stove. During the summer she would can food by the quart to live on during the winter. Son Melvin says she would make about 1000 jars of jelly every year for her family and to sell, along with selling chickens and eggs which she would deliver to her customers. He remembers going with his mother one year to buy jelly jars from someone selling their supply. Lydia bought the entire amount, over 3000 jars and covers.

Daughter Lena Cleveland Sears says one of the most important things Lydia taught her children was to be on time. "It was better to be an hour early than to be a minute late." Meals were always served on time. Neighbors would say they could set their clocks by the meal whistle that Lydia would blow.

Lydia managed all the money in the house, which wasn't much at the best of times, because she had the best business sense. She would give Llewellyn just what was needed when he'd go to buy something. When Melvin went to college, he gave his mother all the money he'd saved. She sent it to him during college as it was needed.

Raised as a regular churchgoer, Lydia continued this with her own children. Clothes for church were laid out Saturday afternoon to make sure they were mended and ironed. She remained active in the First Baptist Church all her life.

After Llewellyn died, Lydia took a home nursing program study course and supported the family as an LPN from then on. She had some notable patients and even made several trips to Florida with one of her patients. Lydia loved to take long rides and made several long car trips, to Florida, California, and to New Brunswick.

In later years, Lydia was a resident of the Long Term Care Unit of the Martha's Vineyard Hospital in Oak Bluffs where she died in 1989 at the age of 91.

Llewellyn died 18 Oct 1944, in Vineyard Haven, Dukes, MA, and was buried 20 Oct 1944, in Vineyard Haven, Dukes, MA.

NOTES for Llewellyn follow:

A much loved and respected man by his family and those who knew him, Llewellyn was known as a shy man who worked hard. He was a selftaught man who had a lot of knowledge. His daughter, Lena Cleveland Sears, remembers that as each one of his children graduated from high school, he would say he graduated along with them.

A florist by trade, he also worked in taxidermy and entomology. Daughter Ruth Cleveland Haddock remembers an anchor floral arrangement he created for the funeral of a fisherman that was extraordinary in design and beauty. At holiday time, he made wreaths that daughters Marjorie Cleveland Taylor and Ruth Haddock recall selling door to door. They also tell about washing plant pots for their dad who gave them a penny each for each pot washed which they saved to buy roller skates. Not a materialistic man, he often gave his creations away or sold them for much less than their actual worth.

Llewellyn had one of the most complete collections of moths, butterflies, and insects on Martha's Vineyard. His son, Melvin, tells how Llewellyn made a case which was 4 feet tall and 3 feet deep. It had eight drawers, every one filled, every specimen of moth and butterfly identified by name and gender. Lena Sears credits her dad with giving her an interest in collecting wildflowers. They would spend hours together while he collected butterflies and moths and she collected wildflowers.

Llewellyn's mother died when he was eight years old. Since his father was gone on long fishing and fur trading expeditions, he and his sister, Mona, were raised by their maternal grandmother, Mary. He also had a close relationship with his uncle, Fred Chase, who continued to live near the Cleveland family all his life.

Melvin Cleveland tells how his dad started out with one greenhouse and eventually ended up with five. Llewellyn was very proud of his workshop on Main Street above the greenhouse and maintained many mounted birds and animals there. He kept a display of seasons in a large window in front of the shop. during the summer, Llewellyn had a roadside stand in front of the shop and sold fruit and vegetables. His wife sold eggs, chickens and jelly there, too.

Lena Sears remembers the lovely flowers her dad made for her wedding, particularly the bridal bouquet he designed. It had long been in his mind for his first daughter that had an Island church wedding.

A man of many talents, Llewellyn played a French horn in the summer band that performed concerts at Owen Park. Years later, his granddaughter, Judy Haddock Swan, would play in band concerts at the same park.

Llewellyn died in 1944 of a heart attack. For his funeral, the town honored him by closing the shops for the afternoon. He was a quiet man, but wellliked by all. He gave to each of his children a "green thumb" and a love of flowers, birds, and butterflies which continues to be evidenced today.

DISCUSSION

Moses Cleveland, who was born in Woburn Massachusetts in 1651, would move to Martha's Vineyard about 1680 and become the progenitor of all the Clevelands on Martha's Vineyard. Moses and Ruth Norton Cleveland had nine children, five of whom were sons, but only Ebenezer would reside on Martha's Vineyard for life.

The next 300 years would see 117 Cleveland sons born on the Island, but in the 1900's there would be only four Cleveland's born there.

In the nine generations beginning with Moses, 68 Clevelands lived to adulthood and married. These 68 Clevelands produced 117 sons. Twenty of the 68 had no sons, 29.4% (either no children or females only were born). Nine of the 117 sons born died young, 7.7%; 11 died unmarried, 9.4%. The number of Clevelands who left Martha's Vineyard to reside elsewhere was 28 of the 117 sons, 23.9%.

Thus, the primary reason for the loss of the Cleveland name on Martha's Vineyard is that the number of sons born to Clevelands declined rapidly after the 6th generation. Considered together with the movement off-Island, it is easy to see how the two factors have forced a situation that will see no Clevelands on Martha's Vineyard within the next 50 years.
