THE JOSEPH NORTON FAMILY

 

14. JOSEPH NORTON, (Nicholas,1), b. Mch. 1652; res. E., gentleman. This ancestor of the second branch of the family was one of the leading citizens of the Vineyard and its first representative to the General Court of Mass. in 1692. He was sheriff of the county in 1699 and was commissioned as Justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1702. He resided at Major's Cove near Miober's Bridge where he lived until his death, 30 Jan. 1741-2. His will 28 May 1741 was pro. 19 Oct. 1742. He was twice married (1) MARY BAYES (14) abt. 1673 and (2) ANN TRAPP (12) abt. 1702; she survived him and her will Sept. 1750 was pro. 7 Aug. 1753.  [See The Norton Family of Martha's Vineyard for more information about Joseph Norton's ancestors.]  [He is buried at Tower Hill Cemetery.] They had the following named children:

51. JOSEPH NORTON, (Joseph,2 Nicholas1), b. abt. 1676; res. E. (on the "Sarson lot"), yeoman, called "Junior" to distinguish him from his cousin Joseph (39); had two wives, the first one unknown in name or residence, who was the mother of his children; m. (2) Mrs. MARY (Green) PEASE, wid. of Matthew, after 1718. Nothing further is known of either of his marriages or the dates of death of his wives. He d. 1734 and his two sons Bayes and Enoch adm. the estate, being appointed May 7th that year. Children:

402. JOHN NORTON, (John,3 Joseph,2 Nicholas1), b. abt. 1704; res. E., gentleman. He was one of the most prominent citizens of the town and county in his life time, serving as Sheriff many years and holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Militia of the county. He rem. to Hebron, Conn. abt. 1774 with his two sons, he being then abt. seventy years of age. It is supposed that he d. there as it is known that his wife remained there till her death. He m. HEPSIBAH COFFIN (31) 23 Nov. 1724, who was b. 7 Sept. 1704 and d. 1794. They had the following named children:

[*This is the gravestone inscription, but there are two contrary records: he calls himself 88 years in a deposition dated 5 Sept. 1783 and Parson Thaxter states that he was aged 80 years when he died. He was a prominent, public-spirited man, a leader in the political and social life of the county; sheriff for many years, deacon of the Baptist Church from its establishment and Major of the county militia.
